Grows the next generation

Over a million additional semiconductor workers are needed globally by 2030. Progress that doesn't grow the talent underneath it is borrowing against its own future.

We are, as an industry, fighting hard over who trains the smartest model. Almost no one is fighting over who builds the chips underneath it. The gap is not abstract: it is a specific shortfall of people who can do physical design, verification, packaging, firmware and system architecture — the least glamorous and most load-bearing skills in the stack.

This is the fault line I’d call fault line zero, because every other commitment here depends on it. Sustainable design needs architects who understand thermal and power co-design. Trustworthy systems need people who can reason from transistor to service. Open standards need enough engineers outside the largest companies to actually implement them.

Talent is also the commitment with the longest latency. A student choosing a degree today is a practising architect in the mid-2030s. Decisions we defer now are capability we simply will not have then — which is why I think it belongs in a design discussion, not only an HR one.
